The method of creating a floating city involves the planting of Lithell Birch trees in an area with a high concentration of amaril, a somewhat rare mineral. When the trees are thus nourished, they create an as-of-yet unexplained phenomenon, an antigravitational field that is directed outward from its roots. The effect of this is that the ground within the field has a reflected gravity field, in essence not only making it weightless, but reversing the gravitational effect. Thus if half of a rock is within the field, the entire rock is rendered weightless. The very first floating cities of the prewar period were made to float with very powerful enchantments that required continual reinforcement of their power. This proved costly and thus none but the very rich or the military could afford to use such extreme measures.
The flying city normally hovers above the city of Ebon, a small town not far from Grunburg. It has numerous hotels and other attractions, and is a haven for the very wealthy. It is not uncommon to find royalty on vacation. The city guard is made up of powerful fighters and mages.
The city has a bit of a secret in that one Delig has bored out large areas below the city, mining for amaril to use in the creation of ships. Mithil birch trees are coming up missing in the parks of Mirril, prompting the city council to hire adventurers to help to discover the culprit. Delig steals the trees for their lifting ability as he builds flying ships with which to attack Grunburg and other cities of Asterland. The lack of trees and the mining below the surface of Mirril is causing the cloud city to lean to one side somewhat.
